With summer rapidly approaching, the Florida Highway Patrol is preparing for more drivers on the roads and increased distractions.
Statistics show that there are more fatal accidents during the 100 days between Memorial Day and Labor Day compared to any other time of the year.
Recent reports suggest that during the summer months, more officers will be patrolling the roadways and keeping an eye out for distracted drivers.
Here are some tips from The Governors Highway Safety Association to help reduce driver distraction during summer travel:
- Turn it off. Turn your phone off or switch to silent mode before you get in the car.
- Spread the word. Set up a special message to tell callers that you are driving and you’ll get back to them as soon as possible. If you need to make a call, pull over to a safe area first.
- Use your passengers. Ask a passenger to make the call for you.
- Don’t use your phone. Don’t ever text and drive, surf the Internet, or read your email while driving.
- Familiarize yourself with both local and state laws before you even get behind the wheel. Some localities and states strictly prohibit the use of mobile phones.
- Prepare. Review maps and directions before you start to drive. If you need help when you are on the road, ask a passenger to help or pull over to a safe location to review the map/directions again.
- Secure your pets. Pets can be a big distraction in the car. Always secure your pets properly before you start the vehicle.
- Keep the kids safe. To address situations with your children in the car, pull over to a safe location.
- Focus on your driving. Avoid eating, drinking, smoking, reading or any other activity that may take both your eyes and mind off the road.
We wish everyone an enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, and as always, we encourage all drivers to pay attention behind the wheel.
