Fifteen people are killed each day in the United States in car accidents caused by distracted driving, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Further, 1,200 people are injured each day in such accidents.

Distracted driving is a deadly, growing problem. In Florida there is no law banning the use of cellphones behind the wheel. But emergency responders are preparing to deal with accidents caused by distracted drivers.

Orange County firefighters recently practiced an emergency simulation in which they rescued a driver who was trapped in his car after a head-on collision. The cause of the accident was a distracted driver.

Authorities say that cellphones are the primary source of driver distraction. But GPS devices and other passengers are distracting as well.

We urge all Florida drivers to pay attention while they are behind the wheel.
