Distracted driving has become a big problem across the country—but most of the focus has been on individual drivers. Now, a new federal law is forcing companies to address the issue as well.

Recently, a new federal law took effect that prohibits drivers of commercial vehicles from using handheld cellphones while driving. The law applies to all vehicles that weigh over 10,000 pounds and that cross state lines for business or commercial purposes.

Drivers who violate the law face fines of up to $2,750 for each offense. Companies that allow drivers to use handheld cellphones while behind the wheel will face a separate penalty of up to $11,000.
