These days, there is a stigma associated with drunk driving. It has become taboo to drive your car after drinking or to allow someone else to do the same. Law enforcement officials have waged aggressive campaigns to stop drunk driving, and similar campaigns are now underway against distracted driving.
For several years, a company called PEERS Awareness has traveled the country with a DUI simulator. The simulator uses an actual vehicle, and it allows participants to “drive” in a computer-controlled environment. The simulator was designed to show people the dangers of driving under the influence. It has now been adapted to show the dangers of distracted driving.
This past fall, PEERS brought their simulator to Washington, D.C. for the first ever National Teen Distracted Driving Summit. Going forward, the company plans to partner with organizations across the country to provide people with real life experience on distracted driving. Currently, the simulator is at a community college in Tennessee.
According to the NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost 6,000 people lost their lives nationwide in 2008 in crashes that involved a distracted driver. At any given moment, over 800,000 drivers are using a cellphone while behind the wheel.
