Actos Lawsuit
Actos, also referred to as pioglitazone hydrochloride, has been prescribed across the United States as an effective form of oral anti-diabetic medication. The drug, manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Company, helps balance good and bad cholesterol levels, regulates glucose levels, and controls symptoms of adults with type II diabetes. Individuals may use Actos alone, or with other medication such as insulin and metformin.
Recent studies suggest that there may be an association between the usage of Actos and bladder cancer. After analyzing five years worth of data, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has informed the general public that all individuals who have been taking Actos for over one year are 40 percent more likely to develop bladder cancer.
Similar studies have been done in France, and have shown similar results. France has since then suspended all use of pioglitazone due to the increased risk of bladder cancer, and Germany has followed suit and has recommended not to start new patients on pioglitazone.
Possible side effects of Actos include blood in urine, lower abdominal or back pains, pain during urination, and the urgent need to urinate. More severe side effects include malignant bladder cancer, eye injuries, heart damage, chronic heart failure, and reoccurrence of bladder cancer in patients in remission.
Actos manufacturers failed to properly warn patients of the risk involved in taking this particular medication, and so the FDA has enforced the addition of a Black Box warning label that informs consumers of the potential risks that come with Actos use.
Pharmaceutical companies are held liable in situations where their product causes unexpected harm when used as it is intended to. Individuals in the state of Florida who have developed a serious health condition due to the use of Actos may have the grounds to file a claim against the manufacturer to seek monetary compensation for medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other damages associated with their diagnosis. At the Law Offices of Philip DeBerard, Injury Attorney, our team of legal professionals can help clients from all across South Florida and the Treasure Coast with such cases.
