Distracted driving has received a great deal of attention recently. In Florida, our lawmakers are working to limit cellphone use behind the wheel. However, despite heightened awareness of the dangers of distracted driving, a new State Farm survey shows that it is still a problem.

State Farm polled 1,000 motorists ages 18 to 29 about their driving behaviors. Forty-eight percent admitted to sending text messages, reading text messages or talking on a cellphone while behind the wheel. Those numbers appear to be on trend with other recent statistics. The U.S. Department of Transportation estimates that 40 percent of all

American teens have been in a car when the driver used a cellphone.

While cellphone use is the primary source of driver distraction, it is certainly not the only cause of the problem. According to distraction.gov, the federal government website for distracted driving, distracted driving is defined as any form of activity that diverts or could divert an individual’s attention away from the primary task of driving. Other forms of driver distraction include changing the radio station, drinking, eating, or talking to passengers.
