Although the worst of Hurricane Sandy occurred up north, her winds and waves still resulted in over $24 million worth of damage to Palm Beach County beaches—and much of Sandy’s impact was on the sand itself.
According to The Palm Beach Post, county environmental managers assessed the total damage done to publicly owned oceanfront structures and beaches in Palm Beach Shores, Palm Beach, Boynton Beach, Boca Raton, Ocean Ridge, and Lantana, and arrived at an amount of $9.1 million. Beaches in Palm Beach County suffered storm damage estimated at an amount of $5.7 million.
Sandy, which developed as a tropical depression in the southwestern Caribbean, caused approximately $9.7 million worth of damage to beach renourishment projects in Ocean Ridge, Delray, Jupiter and Boca, before it left Florida behind and gained hurricane strength as it barreled toward the northeast.
“What we have seen is significant erosion throughout most of the county,” said Rob Robbins, the director of the county’s Environmental Resources Management department.
Statewide the storm caused an estimated $67.2 million in damage. Two of the hardest hit areas were beaches near Jupiter Inlet and parts of Singer Island.
Governor Rick Scott has asked President Barack Obama for a “major disaster” designation – which would allow governments in Palm Beach County and six other Florida counties to recoup at least 75 percent of the money spent repairing the damage.
