When it comes to distracted driving, cellphones get most of the blame. However, according to a new study, text appearing on dashboards also contributes to the problem.
A study by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and New England University Transportation Center suggests that certain text size and type font used in dashboard displays are distracting.
According to the study, enlarging both font and typeface reduced the total amount of time that male drivers kept their eyes off the road by almost 11 percent. That difference in “glance time” represents about 50 feet in distance when traveling at high speeds. However, female drivers showed little difference in their ability to read different styles.
This information is particularly important when considering recent statistics on distracted driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 26,000 distracted driving accidents in 2010 were attributed to adjusting controls or devices found in the car. Furthermore, 3,000 individuals died last year in distracted driving accidents.
