According to a new report by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, distracted driving caused nearly 10 percent of all fatal traffic accidents in 2010. The report studied all traffic accidents that year, and analyzed how distracted driving influenced those crashes.
NHTSA found that 416,000 people were injured in traffic accidents involving distracted drivers that year. Further, 3,092 people were killed in such accidents.
The report lists a number of activities that NHTSA considers to be distracted behavior. These activities include daydreaming, eating or drinking, smoking, and of course, using a cellphone.
In fact, cellphone use is the activity most people typically associate with distracted driving. So what role did cellphones play in 2010 traffic accidents?
According to the report, cellphone use alone accounted for 13 percent of total distracted driving fatalities and 6 percent of all distracted-related crashes. If you’re interested in reading the full report, you can find it here.
