The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles announced last week that the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) will once again participate in the national safety initiative aimed at removing impaired drivers on the Florida highways and roads. The FHP will increase its presence on interstates and other major state roads during the four-day holiday period. In addition, FHP Auxiliary troopers will volunteer to augment the Patrol during the holiday travel period. The effort aims to “deter traffic violations and to enhance services to motorists who break down while traveling or who need other assistance.”
Col. David Brierton, FHP Director, stated in a press release that impaired driving is one of the deadliest and most often committed crimes in America. In order to get drugged and drunk drivers off the roads, FHP troopers will look for impaired drivers aggressively during the crackdown.
The NHTSA or National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports in its 2010 State Motor Vehicle Fatalities statistics that in 2010, there were 10,228 fatalities related to alcohol-impaired-driving nationwide. Florida saw 660 alcohol-related highway deaths in 2010, down more than 100 from 2009. According to Florida’s 2010 Traffic Crash Statistics, drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol were the second leading cause of Florida accident fatalities.
The NHTSA asks the public to get involved and to not leave it up to law enforcement alone to get drunk drivers off the road. The NHTSA asks individuals to take action to prevent people who have been drinking from getting behind the wheel in the first place.

- Making a personal pledge to not drive drunk.
- Reminding your friends that cops are out there looking for drunk drivers.
- Posting a Facebook icon.
- Printing posters and putting them up where people will see them.
- Downloading wallpaper for your desktop.
- Sharing the TV spots and other videos.
