Cellphones are not the only reason teen drivers are being distracted. Having other teens in the car can be distracting too, according to a recent study conducted by the AAA.
The study found that a teenage driver’s chances of dying in an automobile accident increases dramatically when there are other teens in the vehicle. The risk of death of a 16 or 17-year-old driver rises by 44 percent when with one passenger in the car below 21 years of age, as compared to driving with no passengers. That risk more than doubles when there are two passengers that are younger than 21 years of age in the car.
In comparison, the risk of a teen driver dying in an accident decreases by 62 percent when a passenger who is at least 35-years-old accompanies the teen driver. The study was based on government data on teen crashes from 2007 to 2010.
