Texting and driving isn’t illegal in Florida, but deputies in Collier County have found another way to ticket motorists who aren’t paying attention behind the wheel.
Lieutenant Michael Dolan of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office states that there is no citation that specifically deals with texting and driving. The charge in such instance would be careless driving.
According to Dolan, deputies in his county will ticket drivers for engaging in any behavior that impacts their ability to pay attention to the road. This means drivers who fumble with papers, put on makeup, and yes, even text, could receive a ticket for careless driving.
